Can I turn off email reminders?

Absolutely.  You can change your notification preferences in the Preferences screen.  Deselect the applicable check boxes to turn off notifications altogether, or set the interval to 0 for the second notification period if you only want a single notice when your status report is nearing the due date.

What are Organizational initiatives?  How are they different from initiatives I set up in the Company Administration screen?

Organizational Initiatives are major projects or efforts active in your assigned organization that are only visible to members of a specific organization when they create a status report item (  please note that the actual status report item will be visible to your manager even if they are in a different organization).  In contract, company-wide initiatives are available to all users when they create a new status item.
